-Words & Music by Ashley Welborn, Arranged by Cliff Duren
Have you ever found yourself in the middle of the contemporary worship vs. traditional worship argument? I have, on several occasions, found myself in just such an argument. I came from a small town where my Father was a pastor of a traditional Baptist church. Because we believers don’t always act like the Body of Christ, I had a very bitter taste in my mouth for all things traditional. But during my time at Liberty as a Worship major, God spent a lot of time breaking my pride and remolding me. I learned that worship is about sacrifice. Everywhere worship is mentioned in scripture it is accompanied by sacrifice or service.
Romans 12:1 says, “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable. This is your reasonable act of worship.” Some versions even translate the word worship interchangeably as service. You see, God will choose to meet with whomever He pleases. I have felt His presence in a room filled with college students shouting “Sing to the King,” and I have heard his voice resounding in a congregation of 20 in the boondocks of Alabama singing “Crown Him with Many Crowns.”
Our God is no respecter of musical styles. Worship is so beyond music. It is a daily placing of yourself on an alter and a perpetual lighting yourself on fire. It is the offering of your whole self as a living sacrifice, which is a reasonable response to His ultimate sacrifice. It is the least that we can do. My prayer for you is that you will learn to find God everywhere. That you will desire to meet with Him so much that you can lay aside differing opinions about your own current battle and find Him anywhere He chooses to be. My desire is also that you would not get caught up in the snare that Satan has laid of argumentative spirits and spoiled attitudes. Let’s all spend less time fighting a ridiculous “worship war” and more time worshiping Jesus because HE IS THERE when you worship Him!
